Course objectives:
|
The course is aimed at the chronology and systematics of archaeological sources and follow-up theories for the Neolithic period. In the seminars, the students will gain knowledge of the artefacts of the given period on the basis of the study of a comparative collection and pictorial database of artefacts. The lecture focuses on detailed familiarization with archaeological sources for this period, with stone and other artefacts (chipped stone and polished tools including the materials and production technique used, decorations and pottery including its technology and decoration). Attention is paid to dwellings and ritual behaviour (ditches, rondels, burial rite, human and animal sculpture). The students learn about the system of obtaining food (hunting, keeping domestic animals and agriculture). They obtain the basic instruction on the social systems and symbolism of this period; information about the Indo-European issue is brief as well. The lectures are based on the archaeology of the Czech Republic, with extensive excursions into the wider surroundings. A part of the course may be implemented in the form of an independent assignment of the students, aimed at the study of literature and elaboration of a written paper.
